101	Title:	Joseph Buell Family Papers

	Abstract:	The Buell family was a pioneer family from Connecticut who helped settle Marietta, Ohio. Joseph Buell was a sergeant at Fort Harmar, across the Muskingum River from Marietta, when the first settling party from the Ohio Company arrived in April 1788. He later settled in Marietta with his family. Joseph Buell ran a successful tavern. In addition, he was appointed an associate justice of the Washington County Court of Common Pleas and a major general in the Ohio Militia in 1803, and served an elected state senator from 1803-1805. Joseph's brother Timothy Buell was a captain in the militia and also served as a county magistrate, a state representative from 1820-1822, and sheriff of Washington County. Many of their descendants were also prominent in the affairs of Marietta and Washington County. The collection consists of correspondence, genealogical material, transcripts of journals, and family recollections of the settlement of the Ohio frontier. The major part of the collection consists of correspondence between members of the Buell family (1810-1890). Genealogical material is composed of charts, histories, sketches, notes, and a memorial and refers to the Buell family and related Curtis, Tupper, Lewis, Nye, and Gray families. Included is a history of the Lewis family which claims lineage from George Washington and a pedigree evidencing the Washington-Lewis line. The collection is of value for those interested in the settlement and development of the Ohio frontier and the Northwest Territory, and the establishment of Marietta, Ohio. It includes a transcript of a journal of Sergeant Joseph Buell, kept from 1785-1789 and detailing the establishment and maintenance of a frontier military outpost. Extensive materials on the process of recruiting soldiers for service in the 63rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry regiment during the Civil War are included in William H. Buell's papers. Also of interest are the recollections of Pheobe Wood Putnam concerning her journey from Connecticut to settle in Marietta, and Anselm Tupper Nye and unidentified members of the Buell family concerning the settlement of Miami County. Genealogists will find useful records on the Buell, Curtis, Gray, Lewis, Nye, and Tupper families of southern Ohio.

	Abstract:	Paul Bough Travis (1891-1975) was an artist and art educator who taught at the Cleveland School of Art (later the Cleveland Art Institute). His wife, Marjorie Penfield Travis, collected materials on her family history. The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, mementos, unpublished short stories and poetry, and other materials relating to the World War I experiences and artistic career of Paul Travis, and to the genealogy of Marjorie Penfield Travis. Includes diaries and correspondence of her grandparents, William L. and Lucy E. Wood.

	Abstract:	William Foster (1840-1907) was a medical student from Scio (New Market), in Harrison County, Ohio who became a sergeant and hospital steward in the 126th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He was involved in numerous battles before he mustered out in July, 1865. He married Katherine Humphrey that September. The collection consists of photocopies of Civil War correspondence, mainly to Katherine Humphrey.

	Abstract:	Caleb Emerson was a Marietta, Ohio lawyer, journalist and abolitionist, and co-founder of the Marietta Branch of the Washington Benevolent Society. He married Mary Dana, the daughter of an early settler of Washington County. Their son, George Dana, was a captain in the 1st Michigan Engineers during the Civil War. Their son-in-law, William D. Bailey was Treasurer of Warren Township, Ohio. The collection consists of personal and business correspondence; legal papers, financial papers (receipts and accounts); historical, political, and biographical sketches; public letters and addresses; notes and articles on slavery, abolition, religion, and temperance; minutes and journals of the Washington Benevolent Society; civic records of Warren Township; and original poetry.

	Abstract:	Abel Larkin (1764-1830) of Lancaster, Massachusetts and Rutland, Vermont, settled in Rutland, Ohio, in 1804. He served as township clerk, justice of the peace, and associate justice for Meigs County. Abel Jr. and Stillman C. Larkin were his sons. The collection consists of correspondence, family histories, legal and financial documents, account books, church records, speeches, invitations, and writings, of Abel Larkin Sr., Abel Larkin Jr., Stillman C. Larkin, and other members of their family. Includes records of the Chillicothe Methodist Church and Civil War correspondence of James E. Bullock, who served with the 116th Regt. of Ohio Infantry.

	Abstract:	Alcinus Ward Fenton (1839-1923) was a soldier in the 6th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, which was stationed in Virginia during most of the American Civil War. He later served as a customs broker, customs inspector, and chairman of the Board of Examiners of the Civil Service Customs House in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of Civil War letters written by Fenton while serving with the 6th Regiment, Ohio Cavalry; 2 scrapbooks of reunion records (ca. 1884) of the 6th Ohio Cavalry Veterans Association; and scrapbooks of letters and newspaper clippings relating to Fenton's career in customs administration, his relations with Charles F. Leach (customs collector and Republican political leader), political patronage, and Fenton's fitness for office.

The collection consists of correspondence, notebooks, and other papers, containing data relating to the 150th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which were gathered by Kaiser as historian of the regiment; "A Half-century in Cleveland" (1919), which includes Kaiser's observations on topics such as housing, population, railways, industry, and the Cleveland Bar; and "History and evaluation of soldiers' relief in Ohio."

	Abstract:	The Grand Army of the Republic, Army and Navy Post No. 187, was the Cleveland, Ohio, chapter of this national association of Union Civil War veterans. The GAR worked on both the state and national levels for issues such as pensions and the establishment of soldiers' homes. By 1908 there were a total of 8 GAR posts in Cleveland, with a membership of 886. Five additional posts were located elsewhere in Cuyahoga County, with 129 additional members. The collection consists of a record of the Civil War service of living and deceased members of the post. Presented to the post by William Bingham, 1899.

	Abstract:	William Pendleton Palmer (1861-1927) was President of the Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, Ohio (1913-1927). The collection consists of American Civil War documents collected by Palmer, including military and personal correspondence, muster rolls, official orders, ordnance and quartermaster reports, casualty lists, memoirs, diaries, descriptions of the engagements in which various regiments took part, and papers dealing with veterans' organizations after the war. Half of the collection relates to Ohio volunteers, but there are papers from Union and Confederate regiments of thirty States. Includes material concerned with Negro regiments enlisted in the Southern States occupied by Union Armies, and a few references to the Mexican War and the 1850s. Collection features the James E. Taylor Sketchbook.

110	Title:	Wells A. Bushnell, Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Memoir

	Abstract:	Wells A. Bushnell (1839-1907) was born in Trumbull County, Ohio. He enlisted in 1861 as a private for three years in the Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry at Orwell, Ohio, and was appointed a corporal soon thereafter. He was captured in 1862 at Catlett Station, Virginia, and spent ten days in Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia, before being exchanged. He was appointed a sergeant in Company A, Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry on January 1, 1863, and subsequently served as a quartermaster sergeant and orderly sergeant in Company A throughout 1863 and 1864. He was promoted to second lieutenant November 12, 1864, and then to first lieutenant January 31, 1865, in Company E of the Sixth Ohio. Bushnell resigned from service May 28, 1865. The Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry saw heavy action throughout the American Civil War. Originating at Orwell, Ohio, and surrounding areas, it was one of two cavalry regiments raised by Senator Benjamin F. Wade and Congressman John Hutchins of Ohio. The Sixth entered the war in June 1862 during the pursuit of Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley campaign. Throughout the war, the Sixth participated in numerous battles and engagements, including Cross Keys, Luray Court House, Warrenton, 2nd Bull Run, Chantilly, Fredericksburg, Kelly's Ford, Aldie, Middleburg, Upperville, Rapidan Station, Bristoe Station, Gettysburg, Yellow Tavern, Cold Harbor, Trevilians' Station, Malvern Hill, Dinwiddie Court House, Five Forks, and Appomattox. The Sixth was present at the surrender of Confederate forces at Appomattox. The collection consists of a bound volume compiled and written in longhand by Wells A. Bushnell concerning his service in and the history of the Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. It also contains notes, a newspaper clipping, and a ribbon removed form the bound volume. The memoir documents the movements, actions, and battles in which the Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry participated from 1862-1865, including the Shenandoah Valley campaign, Cross Keys, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Five Forks, and Appomattox. It describes other aspects of the war, including camp life of the soldiers, troop movements and transportation, and Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. The memoir also includes a roster of officers and enlisted men of Company A of the Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, which details their military service and in many cases notes their death dates. This bound volume was removed from MS 2152 Regimental Papers of the Civil War, Container 17, Bound Volume 1, for this microfilm reproduction.

	Abstract:	Alfred Mewett was the registrar of the Cleveland School of Art (1925-1943) and dean of the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute of Cleveland, Ohio (1930-1953). The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, account books, deeds, newspaper clippings, and other papers reflecting Mewett's interest in the local history and early settlements of the area around Gates Mills, Ohio, in the Western Reserve. The bulk of the collection consists of notes and articles written by Mewett on many historical subjects, including genealogical notes and accounts of interviews with and recollections of old settlers.

	Abstract:	Jeremiah Browning Mansfield, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Mansfield, was born in 1841 in Ohio, and raised on his father's farm in Wayne Township, Jefferson County, Ohio. He and his older brother Oliver served in the 52nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. Jeremiah Mansfield participated in the Battles of Chickamauga and the Battle of Perrysville, and then served at Camp Sheridan in Nashville, Tennessee until the end of the war. He and Elizabeth Taggart Mansfield were married in Harrison County, Ohio in 1869. She was born in 1845 in Harrison County, Ohio, and received a teaching certificate in 1863. Her brother, Milton, attended Oberlin College and Michigan Law School. By 1880, Jeremiah and Elizabeth Mansfield had settled in Wells Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, where they farmed and raised five children. The collection consists of correspondence, essays, and miscellany relating to the Mansfield and Taggart families; Jefferson and Harrison counties, Ohio; the Civil War; and Oberlin College and Michigan Law School. The papers include letters written over a twenty-year period to James Carrick, an early settler of Harrison County, Ohio and ancestor of the Mansfield/Taggart family.

	Abstract:	Nancie Swan Foskett(1838-?) of Medina County, Ohio, was a schoolteacher (1861-1865) in various schools in Medina County. During 1861-1862, she and her father lived in LeSeuer, Minnesota with her brothers and their families, returning to Medina County in the spring of 1862. In 1865, Nancie Swan married Captain Porter Foskett of Brunswick, Ohio. They made their home in the city of Medina, where Porter Foskett became a successful businessman. The collection consists of eleven diaries of Nancie Swan Foskett, 1855-1869, and one account book of N.A. Goodwin, 1818-1834. The diaries detail her life as a teacher in various schools in Medina County, Ohio, her trip to Minnesota, civilian life during the American Civil War, and family events during the period.

Members of these families were at the forefront of events in American, Ohio and Cleveland history, from before the Revolutionary War until the Reconstruction period and beyond. The collection consists of correspondence, journals, other manuscript materials, plats, maps, pamphlets, political broadsides, speeches, newspaper clippings, biographical and genealogical items, engravings, campaign ribbons, and other family memorabilia.

	Abstract:	William Pendleton Palmer (1861-1927) was the President of American Steel and Wire Company, a director of U.S. Steel Corporation, and President of the Western Reserve Historical Society (Cleveland, Ohio) from 1913-1927. Palmer had an intense interest in the American Civil War and acquired an extensive collection of manuscript material related to the war, the memories of that conflict, and slavery. This collection is one of several Palmer collections from the Civil War era owned by the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of dozens of different types of documents in three distinct categories: civilian, governmental, and military. 	Abstract:	Joseph and Jacob Perkins were sons of Simon Perkins, general land agent in the Western Reserve. They came from Warren, Ohio, to Cleveland in the 1850s to engage in banking, railroad building, real estate and various businesses. Together they organized and operated the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad. Joseph was president of the Bank of Commerce (1852-1872), a leading benefactor of Cleveland charities, the first president of Cleveland City Hospital, and a trustee for Western Reserve College (1846-1885). Jacob, also a businessman and president of the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad, was a prominent Ohio politician as well, serving as a member of the Ohio Constitutional Convention in 1850. His son, Jacob Bishop Perkins, was a large real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Joseph Perkins' papers include business correspondence, building construction contracts, land, tenement, and office leases, financial statements and business records, maps and surveys, cancelled land contracts and cancelled checks. Jacob Perkins' papers include voluminous correspondence, and accounts and receipts of business affairs. Jacob Bishop Perkins' papers include correspondence, legal papers, contracts, deeds, leases, maps, and surveys, all pertaining primarily to his affairs as a real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Other family papers include school books, letter books, estate papers, genealogical information, a scrapbook on the early settlement of the Western Reserve, business papers of Joseph's son Douglas and a Civil War diary by another son Charles. Also included are photographs, diaries, trip journals, correspondence from Simon and Nancy Perkins, financial journals, ledgers and account books of Stephen E. Brooks, as well as material relating to the Cleveland, Warren & Pittsburgh Railroad, the Chicago, Danville & Vincennes Railroad, the Cleveland Female Seminary, the Cleveland Board of Park Commissioners, the Hill Clutch Company and the Walker Manufacturing Company.
